Sweet Lolita Guide

3rd in the series! I really do love Sweet Lolita, and well - I hold a bit of a 'sweet' spot for it in my heart ;v;
it's such a cute, happy kind of style.

  • Bell shaped skirt
  • Pastel colours (Bittersweet lolita usually has a base of black and pastel accents.)
  • Cutesy prints like animals + food.
I decided to focus on Sweet Lolita because this is the very first JSF I got into and loved.
Sweet lolita is all about being cutesy and very very girly and feminine. Co-ords can vary from a very basic look (as pictured above) to completely overloaded with accessories and looking very Decora-ish.
Outfits can consist of:
  • Jumperskirt (like a full dress but the neckline is cut out and no shoulders) + Blouse
  • Skirt + Blouse or Cutsew
  • Onepiece + (Occasionally people still wear blouses with these)
The bell shaped skirt is very commonly found in Sweet Lolita but you will still find dresses that are A-line. Most garments are adorned with lace and bows that give off an extremely childlike, innocent look.
Over the knee (OTK) socks, Frilly Ankle socks or tights are most commonly worn with shoes designed for Lolita fashion which generally make the feet appear larger, and therefore making you seem much more doll-like.

The most well known brand for Sweet Lolita is Angelic Pretty, but other brands such as Baby the Stars Shine Bright and Metamorphose Temps de Fille are also popular amongst Sweet Lolitas. Bodyline also has a wide variety of Sweet Lolita clothing.

The most iconic of Sweet Lolita winter-wear are the wool coats trimmed with faux white fur, usually with a sort of bunny theme. It’s important that you only get coats designed to contain the ‘poof’ of the skirt otherwise the figure will end up looking awkwardly squished. These coats are usually coupled with long boots that are more suited to walking in snowy conditions than your normal lolita shoes. Berets are sometimes worn too. (I am yet to see someone fully kitted out in a russian style white fur hat with those cute fluffy hand-warmers, but those are pretty adorable)

Most makeup consists of more natural tones with the odd brighter colour in here, but remember the aim of SL is too look girly and childlike. A foundation (then powdered face), with eyeliner that extends beyond the natural eyeliner to make the eyes seem bigger coupled with white eyeliner on the lower waterline. Circle lenses are optional but anything above 14mm will really enlarge your eyes (ones with black outer rings will enlarge your eyes significantly even at 14mm). Blush should be very lightly applied, only to the apples of your cheeks.

Do not contour your face in any way, keep it round looking. Add mascara, false eyelases are optional but if you choose to wear them, make sure you have them sticking over the edge of your eye. For lips you can simply just use some tinted lip balm, or if you prefer to just concentrate a deeper colour at the centre of your lips and fade it out a little to create a cutesy, dolly effect. You can keep it matte or add clear gloss. //I think I’ve been reading and watching one too many makeup tutorials sorry for this ridiculously long paragraph

Try to steer clear of clothing like reminds you just a bit too much of something like someone would wear in an anime, although some things may be acceptable for Lolita, most are designed for cosplay and fairly poor quality. Avoid material that reminds you of kiddie’s dressing up clothes.

Eye Makeup Tutorial

Sorry I've not been terribly active here! I've had a rather hectic week with a lot of things happening - also started up a side blog that I've been organising and writing things for  ;v; so you might get some second-hand stuff, sorry!
- - - -

Before I start, please don’t ask why the hell I made more work for myself by deciding to make a drawn tutorial. I’m dumb. There are tonnes and tonnes of videos like this but I felt like drawing something.

[DON’T STEAL THIS IMAGE PLS]

[Optional] Wear circle lenses of 14mm+ to enlarge your eyes further, ones with black rings around the outside will be maximum enlargement however will look less natural, please consult your eye doctor dude before wearing them if you’re uncertain.
(for a more natural look, avoid using black make-up, instead use dark brown)

Start by doing your regular face routine (moisturise!), which might involved applying concealer and foundation, or not if you’re blessed with having goddess like skin.

Apply eyeliner - pencil or liquid to the center of your eyelid and extending past your natural eyeliner. Do not curve upwards or it’ll break the ‘dolly’ effect.

Apply white eyeliner to the bottom half of your eyelid, following how the natural shape of your eye goes, only further down, also line the waterline. This’ll make your sclera seem larger. You can use eye crayon instead for the eyelid for a softer look. Also apply some to the corners of your eyes
.
Apply eyelid primer.

Use a light brown eyeshadow (with a soft, small, flat round edged brush) to shade where shown on the picture. You can use eye crayon here too if you wish,
Use mascara on your top eyelashes, and sparingly on your bottoms ones, making sure not to go past the centre line, and even less for the lower lid. Apply false eyelashes if you wish.

[optional] Use a brown eyeshadow with more pinky undertones around the area shown, make sure to blend well.

If you decide to shade in your eyebrows, try not to add too much BELOW the eyebrow, instead add to the top for a more innocent look, and don’t feel you have to stick to what’s labelled! You can use a bit of eyeshadow on your eyebrows for a softer look.

Try to remember the brushes you use will show on the outcome of your look, sharp angular brushes will create precise, harsh lines for a more grown-up look whereas rounded, softer brushes will make for a soft, gentle look.

Cult Party Kei

Second in the series!

[IMAGE BY ME, DO NOT RE-DISTRIBUTE, RE-UPLOAD OR CLAIM AS YOUR OWN]
  • A balance between looking ethereal, eery, grannyish and doll like.
  • Pale, pastel colours, offwhites sometimes with accents of red. (Dark CPK obviously uses dark colours rather than pastels)
  • Mixing textiles.
  • Layering.
First note, none of these rules are set in stone, particularly with CPK as it’s an ever evolving style.
Cult Party Kei (CPK) is growing in popularity rapidly in western countries, it originates from a boutique based in Harajuku primarily named Cult Party but has since been renamed to The Virgin Mary.

I like to think of CPK as being a fairly relaxed style with little solid rules, it’s not as flexible or fluid as Dolly Kei but it’s not as strict as Lolita.

CPK is all about getting a nifty balance between looking like your Granny, looking ghostly and eery and looking downright ill. (Guro themes work well with this fashion). Traditional CPK silhouettes are similar to that of mori, an overloaded figure created by excessive layering of various fabrics.

Whilst there is some controversy on the so called ‘polished’ CPK look, there is in fact nothing wrong with layering a little less than what most people believe CPK should be. Some people prefer to lean more towards Lolita and Pastel Goth styles whereas some could be mistaken for Mori.

Often clothes that would be used for nightwear is incorporated into CPK outfits, such as nightgowns and peignoir to slippers and PJ bottoms themselves. This is why I say CPK is so fluid, some people choose to look more grannyish whereas others may have an entire outfit constructed from PJs.

Textiles such as Knitwear and Crochet are commonly used for layering to create that raggedy look, sometimes light and floaty fabric like chiffon are preferred or just plain cotton.

Many CPK outfits use religious symbols (most commonly crosses) and bright red accents in their outfits. CPK uses colours leaning towards the warmer side of the colour.
Faded, or natural colour hair is commonplace in CPK,  the Hime cut with curled bangs being very popular.
Accessories are key to creating an overdone look, handmade items of clothing are much loved, even if they have visible defects that can add to the look.

Makeup is fairly uniform for CPK, the aim is to look somewhat ill with sunken eyes. Many choose to use foundation or powder a shade lighter to make themselves look pasty though Shironuri is occasionally used for very dramatic looks. To achieve this look, apply foundation evenly, you can use black or dark brown eyeliner to outline the outer corners up to the center of the eyelids (mascara is optional) and then apply red blush bodly, under your eyes and across the sides of your cheek bones. You could add dark red eyeliner around your eyes too. Try adding dark red eyeshadow in the creases of your eyes to make them look deeper set too.

Pretty much any shoes, like lolita, creepers, rocking horse can be worn with CPK as long as they are pale or red in colour.

(If you want Dark CPK just apply all this information to darker tones instead)

[Disclaimer: I do not claim to be an expert in CPK, if you notice something is incorrect please do notify me]

Mori Girl Fashion

If you liked this entry, please let me know because I'm considering covering lolita, cult party kei and other japanese fashion styles  Q v Q;;
- - - -

[IMAGE BY ME DO NOT RE-DISTRIBUTE, RE-UPLOAD OR CLAIM AS YOUR OWN]
Mori Kei/Girl:
  • Overloaded figure created by layering
  • Can be a way of living, not just a fashion style
  • neutral tones and natural colours
  • appearance is soft on the eyes and natural looking
Please note that you do not have to stick to these rules, they aren’t set in stone. For example, not all Mori girls aim to have overloaded looking figures, you do not have to layer excessively. Wearing skirts and dresses isn’t necessary either, you can wear shorts and trousers.

Try to stick to lightweight fabrics, and avoid synthetic material. Stick to muted tones with accents of brighter colours. (Mustard yellow, red (not post-box red) are acceptable). Patterned fabrics with themes of nature are generally loved. You don’t have co-ordinate your colours so much.

Crochet and knitted garments are great to layer with.
Mori girl lifestyle includes thing like going on walks in the forest or somewhere peaceful, eating food that’s natural (not necessarily vegetarian) generally go by take what you need, respect nature, mushroom picking and just generally being outdoors. Locally sourcing food and trying to reduce your carbon footprint.

Makeup should be kept neutral and as natural looking as possible, use dark brown mascara and eyeliner instead of black, aim for a fresh faced look.Don’t over-pluck your eyebrows and if you do draw yours in try to keep the look soft looking.
Hair is often just left natural, softer cuts are preferred, try to steer clear of sharp or blunt cuts.
Dark mori is pretty much the same, however as it might suggest, black or very dark colours are used instead.
Just repeating what I said early, these rules are not set in stone.

Wearing the Nightie

The material ain't itchy, and it's pretty long on me, but that's because I'm ridiculously short.
Wearing it with socks because I like socks (I got those at topshop)

//this mirror gives me a pea-head bc it's tilted ; . ;
